What contact can I expect with healthcare professionals?

Your midwife will let the health visitor in your local area know that you are pregnant and the date your baby is due.

Health visitors are registered nurses or midwives who have extra training in Public Health Nursing. We’re here to help you, your family, and your baby stay healthy. We work with parents and carers who have new babies, offering support and information from pregnancy until your child starts school.

Health visitors will see you at least 5 times from late pregnancy through to a developmental assessment at 2-2.5 years. These visits are often in your home, but your health visitor may invite you to join groups, clinics and networks run by the health visiting team or colleagues who work with them such as: community nursery nurses, children’s centre staff or voluntary organisations.

A family may need support for specific issues that affect their child and family’s health and wellbeing, so the service provided to your family will vary according to your own needs and evidence of what may work for you.

Dads and partners are welcome and encouraged to be present at your visits.
