Babies bath time

Babies don’t tend to get dirty, so there’s no need to bathe them every day.

You may have heard of “topping and tailing” which refers to washing your baby’s face, neck, hands and their bottom, which can be done to keep them clean.

It doesn’t really matter when you bathe your baby, some parents like to get into a routine, but whatever time of day suits you, just try to make sure your baby is awake and happy.

Bath time should be a relaxing and fun experience for you and your baby. Try the below tips for a happy bath time.

  • Make sure the room you are using is warm before you start
  • Try to be prepared with everything you need at hand: cleaning/ face cloth, towels, clean nappy and clean clothes
  • We don’t advise adding any products to the water for the first month, as your baby’s skin is sensitive and plain water is best
  • Massaging can help them to relax and sleep and helps you bond. Avoid using oils or lotions in the first month.
  • If your baby seems frightened of bathing and cries, try bathing together. Make sure the water isn't too hot. It's easier if someone else holds your baby while you get in and out of the bath. This is good bonding for partners too.
  • Don’t bathe your baby straight after a feed or when they're hungry or tired

Never leave your baby alone in the bath, not even for a second.
