Keeping your pre-schoolers fit and healthy

Encouraging a variety of different activities can ensure you’re looking after their hearts and their muscle and bone strength.

It's recommended that children under 5 years old should spend at least three hours per day being physically active, with at least one hour of this being moderate to vigorous exercise which increases their heart rates.

There are many ways in which you can keep your child active at home through sports and playing games. Here are some of our favourite ways to keep pre-schoolers physically active.

  • Play hide and seek

  • Play tag

  • Go for a local walk to see what seasonal items you can find

  • Running in the garden

  • Football

  • Throwing and catching

  • Scooting

  • Cycling – on a balance bike, trike or pedal bike

  • Swimming

  • Skipping

  • Dancing – we love GoNoodle for an at home boogie

  • Buy some large chalks to draw the numbers for hop scotch
